So my question is when welding these (skirts/gas tanks etc) on a bike or pretty much anythign, Do i need to run a continious weld aound the insert or do i just need to make a bunch of 1 inch welds or so spaced out along the edeges?

they will be cleaned up with bondo afterwards..

hers a quick example in this youtube video of what im talking about

stitch and bondo, a continuous bead will distort the metal

If you are a good welder you can do continuous welds but only a small section at a time, say half inch, working back and forth and gradually join them up as controlling heat distortion in thin sheet is very difficult.
In fact tiny tacks will work very well if there are sufficient of them for strength.
Use cold wet rags next to the seam as an aid to prevent heat distortion. If the sheets are flat then large flat blocks of steel, copper or aluminium will also work.
