This could require only a one word answer:
(Please excuse my profound ignorance of welding.)
Can one weld aluminum to steel? ..specifically the bike tubing. :dunce2:

Short answer - yes.
Long answer - It requires very special equipment and techniques outside the home builder realm. So I guess we cant.

I agree with Tinker und Savarin totally -- you can always mechanically attach the two metals.

Although if you do, there can be problems with electrical corrosion if the joined areas get wet. That's not a reason to avoid such joins completely, since plenty of people use aluminum cranks on steel shafts.
