View Full Version : Does rear axle length matter?

The plans say 20" wide axle plus brackets on the outside which would put the rear wheels ~22" apart. I am going to use wheels with a flange mount instead of a single stud mount. I've already cut and capped my axle. If I mount the wheels under the axle, the distance between the wheels will be reduced by about 3" to 4", I'm guessing.
Will that affect design intent and handling?

Short answer, "yes". Any time you reduce the width of the track, you make it less stable in turns. If you don't intend to take corners at speed, maybe no problem. But it will be easier to tip than the stock design.

If you are not planning to use anything but casters then no worries at all.
