I started welding a couple years ago. No matter what I tried I could not get a consistent feed from my wire welder. It would feed steady and I would get a nice bead and 15 minutes later the #$%^&*( thing would stab, stutter, feed, balk, etc. I thought the feed wheel was slipping or there was a bind in the wire on the reel, or nozzle clogs.
The reels come with a label glued to the surface that contacts the reel holder. Today when I had problems I pulled the reel and discovered the paper was all ripped and gummed up and stopping the reel from turning.
I cleaned the reel holder with Goo Gone and then took a thin butter tub lid, cut a center hole, and inserted it between the holder and the reel. Now if the gummy label sticks the tub lid still turns providing a continuous low friction feed.

MOE - three wheels and an old crank.

Thanx for the tip, Moe.....I'll be sure to keep it in mind if I run into that problem.
