View Full Version : Hand crank location

This is my first hand cycle- I purchased the Ucan2 plans; they are great.
Is there an ideal location for the hand crank? The 14 year old rider has spinal bifida; no use of legs.
Most of the photos seem to show the hand crank elevation near the center line between the seat top and the shoulder.
The cranks seem to be horizontally located with the near side of the crank at or slightly forward of the knees.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi Dave .

Welcome to the forum from the UK

The ideal place depends on the rider - where is the most comfortable for them and of course where they can get most force for little effort .
The other concern is the seat because the legs do provide a little help in "staying put " whilst cycling.
IIRC there is one somewhere on the forum .

Here is a tadpole design for a chap that cannot ride a bike due to balance problems
